How does acupuncture work?

Acupuncture directs the body’s self-healing capabilities through a variety of biologically-measurable mechanisms, including increased circulation, decreased inflammation, the release of endorphins and neurotransmitters including serotonin and dopamine, and the activation of the parasympathetic nervous system, which brings us into a state of relaxation. These mechanisms result in the extremely calming effects of acupuncture, combined with accelerated healing and movement toward homeostasis.

Acupuncture works with the body’s innate capabilities, which is why results can be long-lasting or permanent. The treatments give the body’s systems a nudge and reinforce their own healing capabilities.

Thank you to @dr.perez_acupuncture for these excellent slides on the mechanisms of action of acupuncture.
